Photographers Wanted: Days of 47

Posted by Ryan º April 5, 2009 º Photographic News º 7 comments

The IPPA was contacted by the Days of 47 with an offer for any of our members.  Here is the content of that letter.  If anyone is interested feel free to contact Dave.

“We need professional photographers for a variety of events associated with this Utah event.  It occurred to me that the IPPA and its members could be of service to us and in so doing the Days of ’47 could offer valuable publicity and exposure both to the Association as well as to the individual photographer covering each event.

So as to not be a burden on any one photographer, I am proposing that a member of IPPA volunteer to be the official photographer for each of the events listed in the calendar posted at:

 http://www.daysof47.com/content/?page=events

The Days of ’47 would in turn recognize both the IPPA and that photographer in the pre-event publicity;  at the event; and with photo credit on each photo used subsequently.  This valuable exposure to the photographer and the Association can hopefully offset the time, skill and effort put forth.

Again, so as to not burden any one photographer, a cadre of 13-14 (one per event) IPPA members can share this opportunity.

The expectations of the Days of ’47 would include:

·         Advance notice of the photographer by name, studio, and location to allow that information to be included pre-event

·         Photos to be taken of a quality as to be used by news media, and by the Days of ’47 for brochures, flyers and publicity both this year and next

·         Releases be obtained from subjects photographed so as to grant permission for images to be reproduced

·         Days of ’47 would call attention and highlight the service of both IPPA and individual photographers laboring in each event

·         Members of IPPA would serve as a jury to judge works submitted by students in several classifications in a Days of ’47 Photo contest

·         IPPA members would act in a professional manner representing the IPPA and the Days of ‘47

·         Photographer have FUN and join in the great spirit of the great events of the Days of ‘47

Thank you,
David”

I like the idea… except for the part about having to chase down the subjects of the photos and get releases from them.

How necessary is that, given that it’s a public event?

I’m not sure now necessary it is. Maybe someone else out there knows. If you know please post a comment.

Sounds like a great idea, if they hold to the publicity deal. Otherwise this is another grab for photo rights and an attempt to avoid paying for photography services as an attempt to cut budgets. The publicity needs to be equivalent to the service provided unless this is a pro-bono deal for a non-profit (I don’t think days of 47 is a non-profit)

Need for the release depends on how the days of 47 wants to use the image. If it’s billboards or other advertising of a single subject or group of subjects you would likely need releases. If it is an overview of a crowd at a public event, used for “documentary purposes” you maybe safe without a release. Talking to a good lawyer who deals with model releases would be a good idea. Safest to always get a release if you can.

I shot some events at days of 47 for a small newspaper years ago. Form that experience I would say; It’s best to have days of 47 supply press passes (or other photographer passes) so it’s easy to get around the venues.

I would also say that days of 47 should acquire the releases from some people; like bands, performers, rodeo stars, parade participants, officials, etc; who the days of 47 are the point of contact. The photographer would be responsible for getting releases from attendees that they photograph. (note: days of 47 should use the release form from the photographer taking the photos when acquiring releases).

I would like to photograph the Days of 47 Rodeo. I can shoot one or two of the following days. July 20th, 22nd or 25th.
    Thanks
    Matt

I would like for the competitors to Pre-sign model releases. I will not have time to chase down everyone I photograph. It is helpful to keep a small notebook on you and record the names as announced. Then shoot. Match up the model releases after with the images.

We need to have the Days of 47 main person sign a paper that explains what they will do for the photographers.

I was invited to help with this last year and it turned into nothing – Days of 47 rodeo would not allow photography, the concerts were closed to outside photography and model releases were required from anyone photographed during the parade. Someone should get a written agreement with the Days of 47 before anyone gets too involved

Excellent comments and right on the spot!
There has to be a balance between give and take. I don’t buy the non-profit either.

I live in Utah for almost ten years. Exposure is an offer that will never get you very far from the West. The real deal is on the East.
