After 40 minutes he hadn’t talked at all about photography. Everything he talked about was business. Travis has four areas that contribute to the success of his business.

Business Plan

Sales Script

Employee Management

Branding/Marketing plan

Travis firmly believes that mankind is meant to succeed and refuses to be the “typical photographer” which he was told is cheap and lazy.

For the next couple of hours Travis systematically went through every excuse photographers give for not being successful and gave the answers to those excuses. If you missed this program you missed information on the most important aspect of your business.

After a full morning of business instruction we had an amazing lunch. Three scholarships were given during lunch to three lucky winners. Those three winners got back all the money they paid for membership and more just for attending.

After lunch Travis did some studio shooting. He showed how he shoots to sell several different products. He doesn’t just shoot to get pretty pictures, he shoots to make money. We worked with a family of four starting with the small boys. Travis showed some classic posing and how he mingles in some more modern and fun poses to every shoot.

The IPPA would like to thank Travis for the excellent program. If you missed this program you definitely missed something that would have changed your career.

Bio and Program Description

Prior to opening his portrait, wedding and commercial studio in 1988 Jim taught elementary school for 14 years. Jim began making the transition from film to digital in 1995. This was long before digital instructors, digital cameras and affordable scanners. Files were being scanned by service bureaus, manipulated and a new negative made for traditional printing.

He is fortunate to make his living as a portrait photographer, a dream come true. It is no secret, however, that his true passion is nature photography. He loves the challenge of the elements be it sub zero weather, snow, poor light, wind, rain, sweltering heat or insects. He cherishes his time in nature telling the story of animal behavior that most people rarely get to see.

Jim is dedicated and passionate about wildlife photography, patiently waiting for animals to share their life with him in the wild. It is his vision to capture and share the beauty of wildlife and nature with others.

Jim’s program will look inside his camera bag. He will discuss the equipment he uses to create his images from cameras, lenses, binoculars, GPS and other accessories. He will share his autofocus techniques and camera settings for creating perfect exposures with fast moving subject and ever changing lighting conditions. He will also share his undocumented techniques for creating the sharpest images imaginable.

Jim will demonstrate his postproduction Photoshop techniques that will make your images rival others. He will take you through the deep recesses of Photoshop. If you know Photoshop well enough to get around, but aren’t using many of the advance features, this program will prove invaluable in raising your awareness and skill level to new heights. The latest insider tips will teach you how to create and edit images with expert results. Learn how to apply techniques to real-world situations.

Deb is PPA Certified, Master of Photography and a Photographic Craftsman. She has had several Loan Collection images and has placed in the Top Ten Indiana photographers, as well as the Top Ten at Mid-East States Regional Convention and Mid-America Regional Conference. Deb received a bronze level Photographer of the Year award from Professional Photographers of America in 2007. In 2006 Deb received the ASP State Elite Award for the highest scoring images as well as the best Black and White and Illustrative Award. Deb is a nationally approved photographic exhibition judge for the Professional Photographers of America.

Print competitions are the best way to see how far you have come as a photographer. You can attend classes, your clients may love what you do but have you ever wondered how good you really are? Once you understand some of the basics of photography, print competitions are one of the best ways to learn what you can do better.

This year the IPPA is hosting a Regional Print competition for the PPA. We will have photographers from all over the mountain west states entering prints to be judged. If you have ever wanted to enter print competition this is the year. Not only can you receive local recognition but your prints have the opportunity to be prequalified for the National PPA Print Competition. The merits earned from the National PPA Print Competition help you earn you Master Photographer degree.

If you are like most photographers though, the idea of print competition is scary. That is why on August 10th the IPPA is holding a Mock Print Competition where you can have the opportunity to try out your prints. We will have a panel of judges that will score and give feedback on your prints. This event has no charge for IPPA members so if you are not yet a member, now would be a great time to join.

You can click here to register for the event on August 10th at 9:00 a.m. It will be at the downtown Pictureline store in Salt Lake City. We will also have Nichols Professional Lab there with a special offer to have your prints made up for competition.

For our Mock Print Competition you may print anything 8×10 to 16×20. You may submit up to 5 prints for the Mock Print Competition. There are no other rules or regulations for the Mock Print Competition so get your prints ready and register for August 10th.

There are strict rules and guidelines for the Regional Print Competition. We will be posting the rules for the Regional Print Competition on the web shortly. Make sure you visit our website often for the most recent updates.
