We are over half way through with 2009 and what a roller coaster ride so far. I’ve seen many positive signs in our industry that things are going to get better. IPPA has had record attendance at all of our events this year. I think that people are willing to make the necessary improvements in their business to stay competitive. This cycle of improved knowledge helps our entire industry. I hope every one continues this momenton going into the second half of the year.

I was at a wedding a couple of days ago and in about a 4 hour period of time I had 6 people come up to me and ask me about my camera equipment. I wish I could say that this was unusual, but unfortunately it’s not. There is a perception out there that the better equipment you have the better photographer you are. This could not be further from the truth. I’ve looked back on my work when I was using a 6 megapixel camera at the beginning of the digital transition; those portraits are awesome, even compared to my latest 21 megapixel wonder camera. I wonder if when people go into the doctor they ask what type of scalpel they will be using. Or if any one really cared about the type of paint or brush Rembrandt used. I can just see someone walking into the Sistine Chapel and asking Leonardo Da Vinci “Wow what kind of paint did you use?” We need to keep our industry focused on what matters most. It’s the artist that really matters.

We all need to take responsibility to educate those around us. This can’t be a one person effort. All of us need to help educate our clients and prospective clients on “It’s the artist that matters most”. We need to advertise about it in our promotional materials. Talk about it in our consultations. Sell it in our sales presentations. We can make a difference. Let everyone know, it’s not about the equipment, it is about the artist.

The IPPA was contacted by the Days of 47 with an offer for any of our members. Here is the content of that letter. If anyone is interested feel free to contact Dave.

“We need professional photographers for a variety of events associated with this Utah event. It occurred to me that the IPPA and its members could be of service to us and in so doing the Days of ’47 could offer valuable publicity and exposure both to the Association as well as to the individual photographer covering each event.

So as to not be a burden on any one photographer, I am proposing that a member of IPPA volunteer to be the official photographer for each of the events listed in the calendar posted at:

http://www.daysof47.com/content/?page=events

The Days of ’47 would in turn recognize both the IPPA and that photographer in the pre-event publicity; at the event; and with photo credit on each photo used subsequently. This valuable exposure to the photographer and the Association can hopefully offset the time, skill and effort put forth.

Again, so as to not burden any one photographer, a cadre of 13-14 (one per event) IPPA members can share this opportunity.

The expectations of the Days of ’47 would include:

· Advance notice of the photographer by name, studio, and location to allow that information to be included pre-event

· Photos to be taken of a quality as to be used by news media, and by the Days of ’47 for brochures, flyers and publicity both this year and next

· Releases be obtained from subjects photographed so as to grant permission for images to be reproduced

· Days of ’47 would call attention and highlight the service of both IPPA and individual photographers laboring in each event

· Members of IPPA would serve as a jury to judge works submitted by students in several classifications in a Days of ’47 Photo contest

· IPPA members would act in a professional manner representing the IPPA and the Days of ‘47

· Photographer have FUN and join in the great spirit of the great events of the Days of ‘47

Thank you,

NEARLY SOLD OUT! Book your Tickets to Sandy Puc’s Tots 2 Teens Seminar Tour Today!

Sandy Puc, owner of Expressions by Sandy Puc’ in Littleton, Colorado, is a nationally acclaimed photographer and businesswoman who shares her wisdom and techniques with photographers at all stages of their careers by traveling and lecturing nationally and internationally at seminars and schools. This year she is presenting a national seminar tour called Tots 2 Teens. You may have heard of Sandy and the tour she conducted last year, the Bellies & Babies Tour.

The Tots 2 Teens Seminar Tour covers all aspects of creating, executing, and marketing a successful program that covers children 18 months old to young teens, such as:

*Marketing strategies to attract and retain the ideal clients

*Client consultations—getting the most of your session and increasing your sales

*Posing tips and techniques for increased sales

*An entire session walk-through, including posing and lighting techniques

*Ages and stages—a thorough guide to the best and most flattering poses, sets and backgrounds for each age from toddlers through seniors

*Super tips and tricks—little shortcuts and words of wisdom that will give you greater confidence and comfort behind the camera

*Working with siblings and multiples—rise above the chaos to create family heirlooms

The seminar will tour through 50 locations, and one of the stops will be in our area. For more information, please visit tots-teens.com.

Sandy has graciously offered us a complimentary table at the Tots 2 Teens seminar so that we can promote the IPPA. We have also been invited to provide a slide to be included in the tour’s slideshow. By establishing a presence at the Tots 2 Teens seminar, we can reach out to new photographers who may be looking to affiliate with a local group.

The Tots 2 Teens seminar sounds like a great way to acquire top-notch education at a reasonable price, and it’s in our own backyard. It would also be wonderful to have some of our members on hand to meet photographers who might want to become acquainted with other professional photographers in the area.

As an IPPA member, you may use a discount code that will save you $20.00 on registration for the seminar. The code is AFF09.

The other opportunity that I want to share is the National Charity Model Search campaign. The National Charity Model Search is a campaign that will select “America’s Cutest Kid,” raise funds for charity, and will help photographers make money now! This program is designed to generate business for local studios and is a great way to compete for fun and prizes. This campaign will help bring business and money into our studios during the lean months of the first quarter.

Photographers who enter the contest receive a completely pre-designed modeling campaign that can be customized for their studio. Included in the marketing kit is a blog announcement post, five different comp card templates, an introductory email blast for clients, a follow-up email blast, a model release form, a press release, a model thank you gift certificate, studio poster, and a promotional tips and how-to document. You can download the poster and print it yourself or have it printed by Marathon Press. Marathon is also offering a pre-press postcard available at a discount.

The photographer who submits the winning portrait earns national recognition and up to $10,000 in prizes including a Canon EOS 5D Mark II kit with EF24-105 f4.0 L IS. The national model winner receives many prizes, including a $5,000 US Savings Bond and a Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera.

Any professional photographer may enter. Photographers who purchase tickets for the Tots 2 Teens seminar tour are automatically qualified to participate and are not required to pay additional entry fees. Photographers not attending the Tots 2 Teens tour who want to enter can pay a $79 entry fee. Ticket purchase or National Charity Model Search registration can be taken care of at http://tots-teens.com/event_registration.php.

Some great opportunities for 2009 have come to my attention, and I’m pleased to pass the information on to you. The Tots 2 Teens seminar is on April 1st in Salt Lake City.

This campaign a win-win for all involved. Photographers receive a complete marketing campaign, drive business to their studios, give their clients the opportunity to win fabulous prizes, and raise funds for a worthy charity.

Jerry Hansen - IPPA President

As President of IPPA I’m extremely excited about the up-coming year. I understand that during harder economic times we must be at our very best. Since I started working as a photographer 13 years ago I have seen a major shift in photography. Not only from film to digital, but also in the faces I recognize. We have lost many great photographers, some to retirement some to death, and some who have given up on their dream.

Insanity is caused by a person who continues to do the same things but expects different results. Right now in our industry there is no such thing as a fence sitter. You are either growing and becoming a better photographer and learning of the latest trends, or you are losing your market share to those who are. IPPA has recognized the need to stay at the top of our industry. That is why we are going to work even harder this year to bring you more opportunities to learn from industry leaders and each other. This year we have planned our annual convention and print competition. In addition to the three quarterly events, we are also hosting our annual pizza party print critique and an evening only seminar. We are excited about the great educational opportunities that will be available this year. Through your membership in IPPA we are giving deeper discounts to these events. Please renew your membership early.

I have always felt that those who stand together are much stronger. Our IPPA meetings are always more than just listening to the speakers. My favorite part is getting to know other photographers. I find that sometimes I learn more from peer conversations than anything else. I have always found that IPPA members are friendly and easy to talk to.

We cannot ignore the hard economic times, however do not dwell on them. There is enough business out there. We just need to sharpen all our tools and move forward, not in fear, but with a feeling of hope. That together, by sharing our knowledge and experience we can create a piece of art so meaningful that our clients will continue to make a place for us in their budgets.

- Jerry Hansen, IPPA President
