Spring Quarterly Wrap-up
May 19th was all about Embracing Babies and technical things like histograms,
light meters and perfect exposures. And the speakers who captivated everyone's
attention were Sam Gardner, M. Photog.Cr. CPP, and Christy Goodger. The event
had a great turnout with many staying after to get more information.

Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) Class
Wrap-up
On Monday the 21st of April a group of photographers aspiring
to be certified by the PPA met at Wasatch Photographic. Glen Ricks and Ted York
spent the day giving everyone pointers on the process and some of the knowledge
required to become a CPP. After introductions and a short slide show featuring
the images that Ted submitted, we had a surprise visit from Allison English. She
gave a short pep talk and handed everyone copies of the paperwork necessary to
apply for the credential. Glen took over to talk about the advantages of joining
PPA and IPPA. Ted spent the rest of the morning talking about filling out the
paper work and meeting the requirements for certification. He went on to discuss
some of the technical knowledge necessary to pass the written exam along with
some testing strategies to help in passing the test. In the afternoon Glen gave
a PowerPoint presentation on lighting and composition aimed at helping with both
the written exam as well as the print submission.
If you would like to certify and were unable to attend the
class you can start by going to the PPA website and downloading the information
under certification. Review everything carefully. You can email Ted at
ted@tedyorkphotography.com
and he will send you a quick study guide and schedule as well as steer you
toward reference material. The written exam will be given in September as part
of the convention. Hope to see you there and Good Luck!

Winter Quarterly Wrap-up!
with
Dennis Hammon, PPA Certified, Master Photog., CR.
What a fun day it was with Dennis and the couple that graciously allowed Dennis
to pose and photograph them. They were quite tolerant of the cold temperatures
for an outside shoot but they didn't seem to mind as they were having fun and
were excited to be getting married soon. Scott Smith and his wife also agreed to
be photographed in addition to Ashley Taylor and her baby so it gave everyone
the opportunity to see how Dennis photographed them.
I wanted to say thank you to everyone who attended the winter quarterly on
“Romantic Portraiture” by Dennis Hammon. I enjoyed seeing Dennis in action!
Seeing his love and compassion for photography and giving his clients not only
great portraits but a wonderful portrait experience helped me to think back to
why is it I do what I do. “For the love of the game” one might call it. I
appreciated Dennis’s approach as to how he handles his clients. I believe in
that when, as a photographer, you create a great experience for your clients and
top it off with wonderful portraits and service you will have them coming back
again and again and referring to you many of their friends and family. This
alone will save a studio hundreds of dollars in marketing and rallying up
business. I hoped all of you who were able to attend enjoyed it and learned
something that you may now apply to help you be a better photographer and run a
professional business. I wanted to also thank Karen Kelley, my co-chair, for all
of her efforts and help and for being so proficient in making the quarterly a
great time for all. I wanted to also thank Dennis, you’re a good man and a great
photographer, and on behalf of IPPA and all who may have attended I wanted to
thank you for helping us get a little more compassionate about what we do and
for sharing with us all of your insights and talent. Those of you who were
unable to attend I hope you will be able to make it to our next quarterly.
Sincerely, Scott Sumner aka “The short chubby bald guy”

event photos by David Terry. (Thanks David!)
Congratulations to Junior Martinez and Scott Smith as they were awarded a
$500 IPPA scholarship to be used
toward their professional photographic continued education.
Many thanks to Joe and Mike, our event sponsor
Foto 'N Frame for
their support and prizes in addition to Wasatch
Photographic for providing the lighting equipment and a backdrop. Other
various backdrops were provided by
Artistic
Backgrounds.
We also want to thank Julie Williams, the Utah coordinator for
Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep,
a non-profit organization for infant bereavement photography. Everyone was quite
touched with the organization and Julie's commitment to involve more
professional photographers.
